The Social Weather Stations (SWS) February 2009 Special Survey in Parañaque City shows that majority of the people from the city favor reproductive health and family planning. 86% say that the government of Parañaque should have a policy on reproductive health and family planning while 87% agree that government should provide free supplies or service to the poor who wish to use any family planning method. Almost all (94%) also agree that the city health centers should improve its services.
The survey also shows that 8 out of 10 men and women of reproductive age in Paranaque City favor the Reproductive Health Bill. Support for the bill is seen across all the Districts and social classes in the city. Support for the Bill is also seen regardless of sex, civil status, age and religion of respondents.
"We are not surprised at the result of the Manila and now the Paranaque City surveys because these affirm the result of the national survey on RH and family planning done by SWS in 2008. These surveys simply say that majority of Filipinos support the RH Bill.” said Benjamin De Leon, President, The FORUM for Family Planning and Development Inc, (The FORUM).
Across all Districts of Parañaque, 9 out of 10 respondents agree that birth spacing by three or more years is good for the health of the mother and the children. Currently 11 mothers die daily in the country due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
“While almost all from Parañaque City are supportive of family planning and reproductive health, their representatives in Congress are not. I think that good leaders should base their decisions on scientific evidence and by true consultation with the people.”
At the House of Representatives, Congressmen Roilo Golez and Eduardo Zialzita of Paranaque City are among those who are against the RH Bill currently being debated in Congress. They are also among those who are unsupportive of the right to provide Filipinos with the complete range of family planning services which includes natural and modern contraceptives and not just the natural method of family planning.
"The Filipino people deserve nothing less. So we urged our respective congressmen to listen to the true voice of the people. After all, they were elected in office to serve and be the voice of the people and not be a mere self-serving politician," De Leon added.
